Shahadah: The First Pillar of Islam
Understanding the declaration of faith—the essential testimony that stands as the gateway and foundation of the Islamic journey.
The Shahadah is a short statement, but its meaning is at the heart of the entire Islamic faith. Every Muslim's belief, worship, and way of life is connected to this declaration.
The Testimony of Faith
أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا رسول الله
"Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah."
"I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
The Two Fundamental Beliefs
The declaration of the Shahadah contains two distinct yet inseparable truths.
La ilaha illallah
"No deity deserves worship except Allah"
Muslims believe that Allah is the Creator, Sustainer, and Lord of everything. This belief is called Tawhid, the oneness of Allah.
Muhammadur Rasulullah
"Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah"
Belief that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final messenger sent by Allah. Muslims follow his teachings and example, known as the Sunnah.
Why Is the Shahadah Important?
The Shahadah is the foundation upon which the other pillars of Islam are built. It gives meaning and purpose to all other acts of Islamic worship:
Shahadah in Daily Life
The Shahadah is not simply something Muslims say; it should actively shape how a Muslim lives. A person who believes in Allah should try to:
- • Speak truthfully in all affairs.
- • Avoid and reject injustice.
- • Help neighbors and people in need.
- • Respect, honor, and care for parents.
- • Keep promises and uphold contracts.
- • Be completely honest in business.
- • Forgive others and seek reconciliation.
- • Pray regularly and remember Allah.
Connection to Iman (Faith)
The declaration of faith is closely connected with Iman. Islam teaches Muslims to believe in: Allah, His Angels, His revealed books, His messengers, the Day of Judgment, and the Divine decree. The Shahadah serves as the central foundation of all these beliefs.
Shahadah and Entering Islam
A person who sincerely accepts the fundamental beliefs of Islam and wishes to become Muslim declares the Shahadah. The important part is not simply repeating Arabic words. The declaration should be made with sincere belief, conviction, and full understanding.
Pillar Conclusion
Shahadah is the beginning of the Islamic journey and a declaration that shapes a Muslim's entire life. By declaring that Allah alone deserves worship and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger, the believer commits to a path of devotion, charity, fasting, pilgrimage, and noble character.
